During the latter portions of an apprenticeship, the student (apprentice) will work under the direction of a certified, journeyperson member of the trade one is learning for a specified amount of time. The latter is a method of learning a trade through a combination of periods of in-class, technical/theoretical education and periods of paid, on-the-job training. Potentially, graduates can further their respective training in wood products manufacturing such as via an apprenticeship. In the construction industry, for example, woodworkers typically construct, install, renovate, repair, and/or restore the interior woodwork of commercial, residential, and other buildings. Among the numerous areas in which woodworkers may work include cabinetmaking, design operations, furniture or other wood products manufacturing, interior finishing and design, repair, restoration, renovation, and/or sales. Potential employers include companies, contractors, custom and repair shops, hardware stores, manufacturers, retail stores, and private individuals. Career-wise, generally, woodworkers will most often employed indoors in various aspects of the construction, wood, and wood products manufacturing industries. Graduates of the program may pursue employment, career advancement, and/or further educational opportunities in wood products manufacturing or related fields. To successfully complete the Program, students must fulfill 22 total credits comprised of 13 credits from mandatory classes and at least 9 credits from 'specialty courses.' Even though there are no set prerequisites to register for the Program, BCIT assumes that learners have successfully taken high school senior English, Mathematics, and Science or equivalents.
